This calendar is a collection of facts and events from 1986 published on Mathrubhumi newspaper. It has not been edited or colorised by anyone and it is therefore meant to be a reliable source for backdating events according to the then-current year in India. The calendar has been scanned from a printed copy that was available at an old library branch, which had been destroyed by fire long ago. The year 1986 is the sixth year of the Indira Gandhi era and first year of V.P Singh as the Prime Minister. Early in the morning on 30 Jan 1986, a massive fire broke out at Delhi's post office building. The fire destroyed the post office building including electronic mail system, official mail room and all other departmental offices. The national capital was paralysed by traffic snarls due to the fire and continued for 12 hours after it was put out. Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar scored a sensational century not out, against Australia in the fifth and final cricket test match series at Mumbai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. India won the test by a massive 173 runs and 4 wickets to take a 1–0 series lead over Australia. In this year, All India Radio held an all-academy function at its headquarters in Delhi for all its associate directors. The function was presided over by then Director General of AIR, Pankaj Chandra. Mandal Commission member M. K. Datta was sworn in as the new Irrigation Minister of India after his nomination by the ruling party in the winter session of Parliament. This year, IIT Madras celebrated its silver jubilee with a series of lectures in May. Air India began its operations on 13 May 1986 with a single Boeing 737-200 called the "Aeronca 7" on a trial basis carrying fares ranging from US$75 to US$450 one way per seat. The sole flight was operated daily between Delhi and Kolkata, though it took nine years for Air India to start its scheduled service. State Bank of India organised an exhibition at its New Delhi Headquarters to highlight the bank's 70th year. Tata Institute of Fundamental Research organised a three-day seminar on "The Mathematics of Computing" from 15th to 17 May. Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology held a three-day seminar on "Empirical Data Analysis in Meteorological Forecasting" from 30 May to 1 June. Indian Council for Cultural Relations organized a two-day conference on "Indian Culture and World Culture" from 19 – 20 June. Sixth session of the UN Human Rights Commission opened in Geneva on 10 June 1986, with 46 member nations participating with a total of 146 voting members. cfa1e77820
